To All A Goodnight [1980]

Horror

To All A Goodnight, is a lesser known Santa Slasher from 1980. It is Directed by Genre Legend, David Hess. And stars 80’s cutie, Jennifer Runyon.

Initially dismissed as just another run of the mill, slasher film from the early 1980’s. Caught up in the whirlwind craze, of the similar films of it’s time. Filmed in 1980, and all but shelved due to the casting of 70’s Porn actor Harry Reems. Until it’s release direct-to-video in 1983. To All Goodnight, under it’s surface; delivers a whole lot more than the average cookie cutter, look alike slasher. Due to it’s worthwhile character development, and likeability of the main cast. And incredible twists, behind the who-dunnit aspect of the film; that will leaving you guessing until the very end.

Stars, Skis & Hucks [2005]

Comedy

I forgot how much I hate AFI…but that’s beside the point.

We’re digging back a few years to something I found when Netflix used to mail DVDs out. They probably still do, but with all the physical discs slowly dissolving, the streaming service is far more useful. I can’t count the times I received scratched an unplayable media, and had to send it back, and waste a day. Perhaps that was the secret goal, but I’m not here to ramble on about Netflix woes or screamo goth punk bands, no we’re going to take a look at a Ski Video that attempted to have a plot

Digging Up The Marrow [2015]

Horror

Digging Up The Marrow is the latest film by Massachusetts’ Director Adam Green. It is a mockumentary inspired by, and featuring the monster art of Alex Pardee. It stars Adam Green, and the rest of the Ariescope (Green’s film company) team, as themselves. And Ray Wise as a potentially insane, monster obsessed ex- police officer. Who believes that he has proof of the existence of actual monsters, that live underneath a cemetery.

Ray Wise is phenomenal as per usual. Adam Green is as approachable, nice, and funny, as he is in real life. The rest of the cast as well. If you enjoy Green’s show Holliston, this is right up your alley. It was great seeing genre regulars; Directors, and Actors popping up as themselves. It sheds a light on Adam Green’s professional life, whilst still in the realm of the mockumentary style. The practical monster effects are amazing, and in great abundance.

Avengers Grimm [2015]

Action Sci-fi

Oh Asylum, you’ve grown so much over the years. It’s a shame that Sharknado has been your claim to fame, but whatever it takes to keep things rolling.

For the few who don’t know much about Asylum, they are a company that churns out movies commonly dubbed as Mockbusters at an insane rate for dirt cheap. You commonly see them on Sci-Fi, but since they range from feel good Christian movies to exploitation throwbacks, only some end up airing there. I’m guessing Video on Demand and Netflix are the main distributors since we’ve all come full circle and base movies on the cover artwork again… and that’s just fine with me too.

Horror

The Babadook is an Australian Monster film, Directed by Australian native Actress/ Director Jennifer Kent.

This film has been hyped up, to be one of the scariest films of last year. Even legendary Director William Friedkin (The Exorcist.) Has put his stamp on it, labeling it as “The most terrifying film” he’s ever seen. So naturally when the man who directed the most terrifying film I have ever seen; says that. Then I check it out.

Wolfcop [2014]

Comedy

Every so often, a concept comes along. That seems like pure gold on paper, and in promotions. It builds a lot of hype, that seems damn near impossible to live up to. It creates hesitation for the viewer, due to the fact of being burned by it in the past. When you see the image of a half werewolf, half police officer on the cover. Positioned under the epic title of Wolfcop. That horror nerd inside us all squees with joy. You want so deeply for it to be great. To connect on every level. Wolfcop is thankfully a horror comedy that works.

As a child of 80’s horror; who walked the halls of the video store like it was my museum. A warm, cozy feeling comes from collecting the movies of yesteryear, in my older age. My favorite sub of the horror genre; aside from zombie horror, is the slasher film. There’s something magic about the old stalk, and kill of teenagers with questionable morals. That is more comforting to me, than a big cup of hot chocolate on a winter night. The simplistic aspect, and judge, and jury nature. Of our favorite horrror killers, playing the hand of righteousness; that arrives just in time to right the moral wrongs of life. Fits like a warm glove, over the icy heart that sits in my discensitized chest.

Sometimes a pure gem will get lost in the fray, and becomes instantly logged within the annals of the underrated. This one in particular is 1987’s Slaughterhouse. Essentially the bastard son of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Motel Hell. But also oh so very much more. Being the Director Rick Roessler’s, only attempt at film. Is something mind boggling. He managed to craft a work of horror comedy art, that provides an equally perfect balance of both. With a heart behind it, that tromps anything in the subgenre, that came after it.

Skull Heads [2009]

The little creature obsession continues as Full Moon enters a new era.

Critters Full Moon Horror

Okay, I'm back, and Full Moon is on my mind. As I continue to pour through their catalog, I finally obtained a movie that almost acted as the resurgence of their modern incarnation. Charles Band made it a mission to start producing upwards of four to five movies a year, just as they did in their hey-day. Hey Debbie Rochon said it best "when you don't make much per movie, make a lot of them". So this of course leaves a lot of room for junk, but we'll assume those will remain solely with the Killjoy series.

Skull heads off the bat looks like one of the many 'little creature' films that Full Moon has made. It's no secret that Puppet Master is the cash cow, and between that and Killer Dolls, Demonic Toys, and a few others, it's a safe formula. I did like the look of them, and they seemed to at least stray from the toy/doll look for once, and almost take on a voo-doo feel. Course that could push us into [Netherworld] territory, but we'll just hope that's not the case.

Shaun White Snowboarding [2008]

Games

I seriously thought this game came out in about 2010 or so. I break it out once a year to make up for the fact that I will never go on a real skiing/snowboarding trip. Not for lack of interest, but more due to the fact that you need money and something called a vacation. Not sure what that is exactly.

But despite that, I enjoy watching winter sports, and the game sort of bridges that by giving me an interactive way to watch them. The real draw was below though. Since I'm a huge Oakley fan, it gave me a way to virtually buy a pair that I actually owned, thus making my avatar match real life just that much more.

First Impressions of Dead Space 3 [2013]

A fifteen year old backs me up in my epic struggle to save humanity. I also talk about ridiculous assumptions and expectations.

Games Aliens Bizzare Horror Lovecraftian Monsters Sci-fi

Reviews have been quite polarizing regarding Dead Space 3 and I will be spitting into the collective internet ocean at some point next week, hopefully, with a review of my own. Until then, I figured I'd offer my initial impression from the 2 to 4 hours I played both in co-op and single player, last night.

I hear a lot of comparisons between the apparent decline of the Resident Evil franchise (attributed to, among other things, gameplay changes) and this latest installment of Dead Space. The problem with this comparison is that the survival horror was all that RE really had going for it. The story was never something you could invest in without feeling silly, and each attempt to re-invent or breathe new life into the IP only further distanced it from what it was really all about.

The Dead Space franchise doesn't really suffer from this kind of problem. There's so much you can enjoy that different people like it for different reasons. There's the survival horror element which, among other things, put to death any argument people made about how you can't be scared if you can competently defend yourself. There's the actual gameplay which has remained consistently solid throughout all three installments. And, there's a sprawling, multimedia story told through supplemental comics, novels and movies.

Strangeland [1998]

An internet predator traps young victims in his basement, and forces them to go through body modifcation.

Bizzare Horror Serial Killer Thriller

This movie remained an enigma for me for years. I saw it back in the hey-day, as it played alongside the golden days of Full Moon. In every respect it has Full Moon written all over it, but in the end, isn't.

The main problem was that once you caught a movie on TV, there was little chance it would replay soon after, and it wasn't always easy to even know the name of what you were watching. I just sat there mystified from the scenes I was witnessing, and almost wrote it off as a bad dream afterwards.

Vermilion Pleasure Night [2002]

A bizarre and unsettling Japanese late-night variety and comedy skit show you MIGHT have heard of.

Action Animation Asian Bizzare Comedy Sci-fi Zombies Series

Vermilion Pleasure Night is a Japanese comedy variety show that primarily focuses on parodying popular Japanese shows and American sitcoms. You could probably get away with likening it to an episode of Tim and Eric, except for the fact that the episodes are longer, which can be a plus and a minus.

Tim and Eric, for the most part, got away with their brand of humor because of the brevity of it. Even if a joke tanks or is so weird it's actually offensive, they cut so abruptly that you're actually left wondering if you actually saw what you just saw.

A hunt for winter assassin bugs leads to a more interesting discovery

Other Bugs

A colleague of mine who knows I'm into bug photography called me one day since he found some bugs in the office. He figured they were assassin bugs, and that's not out of the ordinary since members of the True Bug family tend to overwinter inside. I made a point to bring my camera into work since opportunities to photograph any sort of wildlife in January tend to be non-existent.

I head over the next day, and we trek to the top floor of one of the old New mansions. Probably not one you've heard of, but there's so many that even the run of the mill buildings around here are enormous. Heck, I work in what used to be a stable, and it's still out of the financial reach of most mere mortals.

Anyhow, up in the rooms designed for people from the 1800's, with six foot ceilings and doors that require ducking, we head to one of the drafty windows, where I can clearly get a line of sight to the outside when looking at the right angle through some of the wall gaps. There's a few bug carcasses, called frass from this point on, but one that's alive.

The problem I find with manga and, really, American comics as well is that it's very easy for me to get burnt out. I can only read a reboot of Ghost Rider or Spiderman or Batman so many times before I start to feel like maybe I've heard this story before and manga isn't much better, most of the time, though for different reasons.

Issues I find with manga typically stem from the inherent nature of the product: to be extremely marketable and profitable. It's the same way with anime too; it exists to create characters or scenarios that sell lots of creepy ass anime girl pillow cases and action figures.

The Adventures of Mark Twain [1985]

Will Vinton attempts to tackle some very tough issues in this children's classic - straddling the line between profound and darkly disturbing.

Action 80s Animation Classic Comedy

Will Vinton, who many of you might remember for the California Raisins, is kind of a god to Claymation. He is right up there with Art Clokey (Gumby), Henry Selick (Coraline) and Nick Park (Wallace & Gromit). And just like all the other greats, there is always this distinctly Vinton look to all the things he touches.

His characters are like soft, malleable caricatures with exaggerated features. It's like if someone took those wacky drawings you can have done of yourself at a carnival and made them out of clay. There's also this almost unprecedented level of detail in his creations and his involvement has never been more apparent than in The Adventures of Mark Twain.

Yeti Hunter

Dropped in a barren and blinding wilderness, you set off in hunt for a Yeti.

Games Monsters

Yeti Hunter is an atmospheric game not for the faint of heart. Much like the found-footage genre of today's horror movies, it relies on subtle concentration to achieve its most terrifying moments. You begin with no backstory nor clue as to what is going on. Instead, a pool lay below you; its contents are what you hope is your own blood—and then you're off.

In each direction, hopelessness awaits. Each tree looks the same. There is no compass nor sense of direction, but instinctively you start running in a direction, confident that your goal is nearly in sight at all times. Dodging shrubs and circle-strafing around trees (lest you accidentally climb one), your search is a frantic one, always second-guessing what you see in the distance.

Getting back into the groove

Blog

So with the site being dormant for a great while, and little reason to update, we felt it was time for a change. I had been holding onto the old design for sentimental reasons since it was the last portion of my old websites, and I still felt like it worked. But it really was aging, and annoying to update as well. So we designed to redo it from the ground up with a better presentation layer and hopefully get things moving.

We're going to try and share the updates, so it doesn't become too overwhelming, concentrating less on churning out movie reviews and more on things that interest us. Granted there will still be plenty of movies, but those will probably be the micro or no budget ones, since they end up being the most interesting. But in addition, I want to look at lesser known games, random local foods and find, and maybe a few video series where I dig up some long lost treasures.

Hopefully this run will prove more successful.
